Curriculum Barriers

This is my first time working with the Curriculum Barriers template and model. I can't lie, it was not easy at first figuring out. I followed the model presented on the website. It seemed relatively easy and manageable when going through the tutorial however being sent to do it alone was rather difficult. But once I got it going it became more manageable. And when I finished and took a look t the whole template, what a help it was and how simple it looked spread laid out in this format. I feel as though I can take it in to school with me and really use it to my benefit to help my student better succeed using their strengths and weaknesses in the classroom. This formatting will take practice however once mastered it could be one of the most helpful tools to use when creating lessons and units.

  1. I definitely agree that at first managing the curriculum barriers information was difficult, but it did not take long to figure it out and work through it. I think this is one of the most valuable pieces of UDL information because it allows you to really look at your methods and materials and find out that something as simple as using different colors on the board, or not turn your back to write on the board while providing instructions can severely impact the students in the classroom. This tutorial and template will be something I review again and continue to use through my professional career.

    I also agree that this is extremely useful in a classroom. I think your layout is detailed and easy to follow. As I mentioned in my blogs, it is important to know the barriers each student will face so we as teachers are able to help them.

  3. Tara, your curriculum barriers table is very easy to follow. After completing this activity, this definitely seems like a useful tool to use in the classroom. It's so important to try to figure out what could inhibit a child's success BEFORE the lesson starts, so you can help the child achieve success. Sometimes it could be a weakness that inhibits the success because a child is unable to do a certain task. Other times, however, it may be a strength that is holding a child back because they are ready for more! Great post.

  4. It is so interesting that you mention the strengths and the weaknesses both being a obstacle in a child's learning. I feel as though this template really helped to see that a barrier could very well be a child's strength if they are above what they are doing and may be bored. This is something I didn't necessarily see before and so I couldn't agree more that it is important o use tools and resources like this template to help better serve out students and guide them to success.
